Corporal William Kyle Carpenter, USMC

Medal of Honor Recipient

OUR NAMESAKE

Kyle Carpenter enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2009. In 2010, he was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In November 2010, Lance Corporal Carpenter and Lance Corporal Nicholas Eufrazio were manning a rooftop security position in Helmand Province when a live grenade landed next to them. Without hesitation, Carpenter threw himself between the grenade and his fellow Marine, absorbing the majority of the explosion. He sustained catastrophic injuries, including a skull fracture and a punctured lung, and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby military hospital.

Against all odds, Carpenter survived. He spent two and a half years in the hospital and endured more than 40 surgeries. On June 19, 2014, Corporal Carpenter received the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States, for his extraordinary act of selfless courage.

"Please take it from me, enjoy every day to the fullest, don't take life too seriously, always try to make it count, appreciate the small and simple things, be kind and help others, let the ones you love always know you love them, and when things get hard trust there is a bigger plan and that you will be stronger for it."

— Cpl. Kyle Carpenter, USMC

THE USNSCC

Federally chartered by Congress in 1962, the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a nonprofit youth leadership development program sponsored by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. With nearly 400 units nationwide, the USNSCC provides hands-on training in leadership, teamwork, and discipline to young Americans ages 10–18 — with absolutely no military obligation.

FOR FAMILIES

PARENT RESOURCES

The Sea Cadet experience is a family journey. Here's what you need to know to help your student succeed in their leadership development.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your cadet will grow in confidence, discipline, and leadership. Expect early Saturday mornings and immense pride in their progress. The first few drills can feel overwhelming, which is normal.

👥

VOLUNTEER WITH US

We are 100% volunteer-led. We need parents to serve as instructors and administrative support. No military background is required — just a passion for developing young leaders.

SUPPORT THE DIVISION

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we rely on community support. Donations fund uniform assistance and scholarships. Every contribution directly impacts a young person's growth.

"Sea Cadets gave my son something no other program could — real confidence. He learned to lead, to serve, and to believe in himself. Watching him stand at attention in formation for the first time was a moment I'll never forget."

— Parent of an NLCC Cadet
